Top Ten Songs about Wanting More Time with Loved One

Some people are just not ready for a relationship to break up or a loved one to leave. While there are a ways of dealing with this problem, the narrators of these songs are requesting more time. They accept that they can’t stop the other person from going. They simply want one last good moment to cherish before they face a broken heart.

“Come a Little Closer” by Brandy

In the song, the narrator realizes that she shouldn’t feel so strongly about the guy because “I know that you’ll be leaving me soon.” It’s just that “When I look in your eyes, I can see / A million possibilities.”

Come a little bit closer
Let me hold you, baby
I will be good to you
And we can try to forget tomorrow
And make it last forever tonight

“Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” by 702

702 is an R&B trio named after the area code of their hometown of Las Vegas, Nevada. This is a sweet song that is a little more pop-rock than R&B (in my opinion).

Don’t you go breaking my heart
Stay for awhile
I’ll make it all right (Make it all right)
Cause if you go breaking my heart (Go breaking)
I won’t survive (Can’t survive)
So stay for tonight

“Here We Are” by Gloria Estefan

This song is about a woman who is facing a separation with her lover. She knows she can’t stop him for leaving so she ask that “We forget time and place / Hold me now, don’t let go / Though it hurts and we both know.”

The time we spend together’s gonna fly
And everything you do to me
Is gonna feel so right
Baby, when you’re loving me
I feel like I could cry
‘Cause there’s nothing I can do
To keep from loving you

“I Can’t Make You Love Me” by Bonnie Raitt

While this song has been covered by a number or people, no other voice seems to fit the song the way Raitt’s raspy vocals do. The narrator knows her lover doesn’t lover her, but in this moment she doesn’t care. As she says “Morning will come and I’ll do what’s right / Just give me till then to give up this fight / And I will give up this fight.”

Cause I can’t make you love me if you don’t
You can’t make your heart feel something it won’t
Here in the dark, in these lonely hours
I will lay down my heart and I’ll feel the power
But you won’t, no you won’t
‘Cause I can’t make you love me, if you don’t

“Just For Tonight” by Vanessa Williams

Keith Thomas is credited with writing the lyrics of this song, but Vanessa Williams was the actual writer. this song was part of a goodbye letter she wrote to Herbie Hancock in 1990. The words were inspired in part by a tabloid rumor that Vanessa was caught having an affair with another man.

Baby, just for tonight let me give myself to you
And all I ask is just for tonight
Love me like you used to do
And I promise that I won’t cry, I won’t ask you why
I won’t even try to change your feelings
If you just hold me tight, just once more
Just for tonight

All I want is one more night
So why don’t you come to me, let me dream
This night means everything to me
All ask is for tonight
baby just hold me tight
Come to me, let me dream
This night means everything to me

“Just Until Sundown” by Further Seems Forever

Further Seems Forever was American rock band that formed in 1998 in Florida and disbanded in 2006. They never really had a hit song, which is sad since this was a really good song.

Just for the moment,
just one more time,
just one more second,
and we’ll be just fine,
it would be just, just in case it’s the last time.
Just until sundown,
just one more day I could hold you,
without you pushing me away.

“My All” by Mariah Carey

What person wouldn’t give anything, or in the case of this song everything, to have just one more precious moment with the person they care most about? If you’ve felt that way, then you’ll connect with this song.

I’d give my all to have
Just one more night with you
I’d risk my life to feel
Your body next to mine
Cause I can’t go on
Living in the memory of our song
I’d give my all for your love tonight

“One Moment More” by Mindy Smith

There are two versions of this song by Mandy Moore. The first version was released on a sampler album. But when the main album was released, the version was more acoustic and the first version has all but disappeared. The song was likely written about Smith’s adoptive mother, who died of cancer when Smith was 19. “It’s just enough to see a shooting star / To know you’re never really far.”

Oh, please don’t go
Let me have you just one moment more
Oh, all I need
All I want is just one moment more
You’ve got to hold me and keep me

“One More Night” by Phil Collins

If you listen closely to the lyrics, this song is not really a break up song. The narrator is asking for more time so he can get up the courage to confesses feelings. As the lyrics say “I’ve been sitting here so long / Wasting time, just staring at the phone / And I was wondering should I call you / Then I thought maybe you’re not alone.” Sadly, the narrator knows how the girl feels as he says “I know there’ll never be a time you’ll ever feel the same” but he keeps up hope and says “But if you change your mind you know that I’ll be here / And maybe we both can learn.”

Please give me one more night, give me one more night
One more night ’cause I can’t wait forever
Give me just one more night, oh just one more night
Oh one more night ’cause I can’t wait forever

“One More Time” by Chanté Moore & Kenny G

Chanté Moore is an R&B singer with a great voice. She teamed up with Kenny G for this passionate song about a lover who wants more time before the heartache.

Just one more time
One more moment
To take you in my arms
One more chance
One more kiss
Before I wake to find you gone
One more time
Before I have to face another day,
and my heart breaks again

“Touch Me in the Morning” by Diana Ross

Diana Ross considered this one of the hardest songs for her to sing vocally. Luckily for her, she managed it since the song rejuvenated her career and was one of her longest-charting hit singles. In the song, the narrator is asking for one more night with her lover. She accepts that he is going as she says “It must’ve been hard to tell me that you’ve given all you had to give / I can understand you’re feeling that way / Everybody’s got their life to live.”

Well, I can say goodbye in the cold morning light
But I can’t watch love die in the warmth of the night
If I’ve got to be strong
Don’t you know I need to have tonight when you’re gone?
‘Til you go I need to lie here and think about
The last time that you’ll
Touch me in the morning then just close the door
Leave me as you found me, empty like before
