If your love recently said good-bye, or if you’re about to leave someone you love, then you’ll be able to relate to these songs. All ten talk about how hard it can be when you must leave the person you love. These songs may not make leaving any easier, but at least you’ll know that you’re not the only one to feel this way.
“Babe” by Styx
Dennis DeYoung actually wrote this as a birthday present for his wife, Suzanne. She initially didn’t want it released because it seemed too personal. Luckily for us, she changed her mind.
Babe, I’m leaving, I must be on my way
The time is drawing near
My train is going, I see it in your eyes
The love, the need, your tears
But I’ll be lonely without you
And I’ll need your love to see me through
Please believe me, my heart is in your hands
And I’ll be missing you
“Leaving on a Jet Plane” by John Denver
A classic song by John Denver about a man who is ready, but reluctant, to leave the one he loves.
All my bags are packed I’m ready to go
I’m standin’ here outside your door
I hate to wake you up to say goodbye
But the dawn is breakin’ it’s early morn
The taxi’s waitin’ he’s blowin’ his horn
Already I’m so lonesome I could die
“Miss You Nights” by Cliff Richards
This song was originally written and recorded by Dave Townsend in the 1970s, but never released. Eventually, Cliff Richards recorded it and it became a Top-20 hit in the United Kingdom. If you want a more modern version of the song, Westlife does a great job of performing it.
Lay down all thoughts of your surrender
It’s only me who’s killing time
Lay down all dreams and feelings once remembered
It’s just the same this miss you game
Thinking of my going
How to cut the thread and leave it all behind
Looking windward for my comfort
I take each day as it arrives
But these miss you nights are the longest
“Save Tonight” by Eagle Eye Cherry
A more upbeat song on this list about celebrating the moments you have before they are gone. One of the most important lines of this song has to be “Tomorrow comes with one desire / to take me away.”
It ain’t easy to say goodbye
darling please don’t start to cry
’cause girl you know I’ve got to go
and Lord I wish it wasn’t so
“Sealed With a Kiss” by Brian Hyland
In every list, you have to have a classic. This is it. Nothing like being separated from your love for the summer, but at least they could write letters. (You remember letters. Those things we used to write before e-mails.)
Though we’ve got to say good-bye
For the summer
Darling, I promise you this
I’ll send you all my love
Every day in a letter
Sealed with a kiss
“Somewhere Somehow” by Michael W. Smith & Amy Grant
For as good as this song is, I’m surprised it didn’t make the charts. It is a departure from the religious songs for both Smith and Grant. The duet expresses the feelings of two people as he is about to leave. What I like most about this song is how the lines sometimes overlap each other rather than the neat “you sing, I sing” of most duets.
Somewhere far beyond today
I will find a way to find you
And somehow thru the lonely nights
I will leave a light in the dark
Let it lead you to my heart
“Stay Where I Can See You” by The Starting Line
Neither the song nor the band ever became popular. In the song, the narrator talks about how he wants the girl he loves to stay with him because being apart is too difficult.
I can name all 50 states
48 get in the way
From me being next to you (From me being next to you)
If it were up to me
We’d have everything we need
You’d have me, and I’d have you
“Teleport A & B” by The Spill Canvas
This song is not as sweet as some of the others listed. The narrator talks about how difficult it is to be apart from the girl he loves.
My faith in you could move these mountains I am driving through
It’s times like these when I wish I could teleport to you
’cause then we wouldn’t have an issue
We’re cleverly, strategically
Challenging our fright and insecurities,
And never seem to want to leave
“Tiger Lily” by Matchbook Romance
“Tiger Lily” is about a guy who’s girlfriend is leaving. They have one last night together and he wants it to be perfect.
Why does tonight, have to end?
Why don’t we hit restart,
and pause it at our favorite parts.
We’ll skip the goodbyes
If i had it my way,
I’d turn the car around and runaway,
Just you and I.
“When You’re Gone” by Avril Lavigne
In this song, the narrator is thinking about all how difficult is when the person she loves is gone away. She doesn’t want him to leave because she feels they are meant to be together.
When you’re gone
The pieces of my heart are missing you
When you’re gone
The face I came to know is missing too
When you’re gone
The words I need to hearto always get me through the day and make it OK
I miss you
