Top Ten Sad Songs about Cheating

In some ways, all songs about cheating are sad. But these songs tug at the heart strings a bit more than others. They are the perfect to play if you are looking for consolation as you have a good cry. At the very least, they will make you understand that the heartache you are feeling because your lover cheated on you is only temporary.

“All These Years” by Sawyer Brown

This is one of my favorite songs because of the lyrics. The song is more about a marriage right before a divorce, but it does include the line “She said, ‘You’re not the man you used to be’ / And he said, ‘Neither is this guy’.” Another good line is “All these years, where have I been? Well, I’ve been down the road to work and home again / And I’m still here and till’ I’m gone / Don’t you rub it in too hard that I’ve been wrong / All these years.”

All these years, what have I done
I’ve made your supper and your daughter and your son
Still I’m here and still confused
But I can finally see how much I stand to lose
All these years

“Broken Vow” by Josh Groban or Lara Fabian

“Broken Vow” was written and recorded by Lara Fabain, a lyric soprano with a vocal range that spans four octaves. If you like Sarah Brightman or Linda Eder, you’ll like Lara Fabain. This song is very moving as the narrator tries to comes to terms with the affair.

Tell me the words I never said
Show me the tears you never shed
Give me the touch
That one you promised to be mine
Or has it vanished for all time

“Careless Whisper” by George Michael

Contrary to popular belief, this song was not based on an actual event in George Michael’s high school dating life, but rather he thought the whole thing up while boarding a bus. It was a fictitious story, b

Though it’s easy to pretend
I know you’re not a fool.
I should have known better than to cheat a friend
And waste a chance that I’ve been given.
So I’m never gonna dance again
the way I danced with you.

“Dreams to Remember” by Otis Redding

“Dreams to Remember” is very similar to “Broken Vow” in the tone and subject. It has some extremely heart-wrenching lyrics like “I know you said he was just a friend/ But I saw him kiss you again and again/ These eyes of mine, they don’t fool me/ Why did he hold you so tenderly?”

I’ve got dreams
Dreams to remember
I’ve got dreams Dreams to remember

Honey I saw you there last night
Another mans arms holding you tight
Nobody knows what I feeled inside
All I know, I walked away and cried

“I Wish It Would Rain” by The Temptations

This song was written by Roger Penzabene right after he learned his wife had been cheating on him and left him. He wrote this song along with its follow-up “I Could Never Love Another (After Loving You).” Tragically, Penzabene committed suicide just a week after this song was released.

Sunshine, blue skies, please go away
My girl has found another and gone away
With her, went my future
My life is filled with gloom
So day after day, I stay locked up in my room
I know to you, it might sound strange
But I wish it would rain (Oh how I wish that it would rain)
‘Cause so badly, I wanna go outside (Such a lovely day)

“Lately” by Stevie Wonder

In the song “Lately” the protagonist is trying to figure out if his lover is having an affair. He notices that her behavior has changed lately, and can’t think of any other reason for it. In the end, he says “I hope my premonition misses, / but what I really feel, my eyes won’t let me hide, / cause they always start to cry / cause it’s time could mean goodbye.”

Lately I have had this strangest feeling,
with no vivd reasons here to find
Yet the thought of losing’s been hanging, round my mind…
Far more frequently you’re wearing perfume,
with you say, “No special place to go”
But when I ask will you be coming back soon,
you don’t know, never know

“Liar, Liar” by The Castaways

The Castaways are an obscure band and “Liar, Liar” is the least obscure of their songs. The melody is not as sad as some of the other songs, but the lyrics make up for it.

Ask me, baby, why I’m sad
You’ve been out all night, know you’ve been bad
Don’t tell me different, know it’s a lie
Come kill me, honey, see how I cry

Why must you hurt me, do what you do
Listen here, girl, can’t you see I love you
Make a little effort, try to be true
I’ll be happy, not so blue

“Long Black Veil” by Johnny Cash

“Long Black Veil” takes its place on this list because it is sort of tragic. In the song, the narrator is convicted of a murder he didn’t commit. He had an alibi but “I spoke not a word, thou it meant my life /
For I’d been in the arms of my best friend’s wife.” So he ends up getting hanged for the crime, but his mistress visits his grave.

Oh, the scaffold is high and eternity’s near
She stood in the crowd and shed not a tear
But late at night, when the north wind blows
In a long black veil, she cries ov’re my bones

She walks these hills in a long black veil
She visits my grave when the night winds wail
Nobody knows, nobody sees
Nobody knows but me

“Love Letters in the Sand” by Andy Williams

“Love Letters in the Sand” is an oldie but a goody. Through the years it has been covered by a number of people including Pat Boone. It was also included in Boone’s film Bernardine. The song was inspired by an 1881 composition “The Spanish Cavalier.”

How you laughed when I cried
Each time I saw the tide
Take our love letters from the sand
You made a vow that you would ever be true
But somehow that vow meant nothing to you

“Snowbird” by Anne Murray

The Snowbird in this song is a metaphor for freedom. The bird is able to jump up and fly away while the narrator of the song is stuck with her heartache. The narrator is somewhat torn about what she should do. She says “That he’ll only break my heart again should I decide to stay / But now I feel such emptiness within / For the thing that I want most in life’s the thing that I can’t win.”

Spread your tiny wings and fly away
And take the snow back with you
Where it came from on that day
The one I love forever is untrue
And if I could you know that I would
Fly away with you
