What better way to start out this blog than to focus on songs about beginnings. Sometimes its about new love, other times about starting over. No matter why you need a new start, these songs can help inspire you. The list is in no particular order.
“Let’s Get it Started” by the Black Eyed Peas
If you’re looking for a hip hop, fast moving song that will get people moving, this is the perfect song. This song was included on the soundtrack for It’s a Boy Girl Thing and was featured in the movie White Chicks. “Better Days” by Goo Goo Dolls
Amazingly, this song is actually a Christmas song, although the word “Christmas” is never mentioned. It has been used quite frequently as a tribute to various tragedies. ABC and CNN used it during their Katrina coverage and it was included in many of the Virginia Tech Massacre tributes.
So take these words
And sing out loud
Cause everyone is forgiven now
Cause tonight’s the night the world begins again
“This Could Be The Start Of Something Big”
If you miss the Rat Pack and 1940s, then this song is more your style. It has been covered by a number of greats including Ella Fitzgerald, Bobby Darin, Bobby Rydell, and Tony Bennett. Although it is not overly romantic, it does lean toward that vein.
This could be the start of something very big,
Why don’t you play your part?
Please give your heart to me….and see.
This could be the start of something wonderful,
Why don’t you take a chance?
Just try romance with me….and see.
“New Beginning” by Tracy Chapman
“New Beginning” is the title track for the album Chapman released in 1995. The song focuses more on the whole world making a change rather than individual changes. B001IAUGOG
The whole world’s broke and it ain’t worth fixing
It’s time to start all over, make a new beginning
There’s too much fighting, too little understanding
It’s time to stop and start all over
Make a new beginning
“Aquarius/Let The Sun Shine In” by The 5th Dimension
Sometimes referred to as “The Age of Aquarius” or “Let the Sunshine in” this song is a medley of two songs featured in the musical Hair. It was one of the most popular songs of 1969.
When the moon is in the seventh house
And Jupiter aligns with Mars
The peace will guide the planets
And love will steer the stars
This is the dawning of the age of Aquarius
“At the Beginning” by Richard Marx & Donna Lewis
Okay, if you’ll forgive that this song was used as the theme song for the animated movie Anastasia, it is a great song. It focuses on starting over with someone you care about.
And life is a road that I wanna keep going
Love is a river, I wanna keep flowing
Life is a road, now and forever, wonderful journey
I’ll be there when the world stops turning
I’ll be there when the storm is through
In the end I wanna be standing
At the beginning with you
“Not Afraid” by Eminem
This 2010 song debuted at number on Billboard’s charts, only the second rap single to do so. It was nominated for the Best Rap Song Grammy and won the Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance. Lyrically, the song is about Eminem’s self-imposed exile and his return free from drugs.
I’m not afraid to take a stand
Everybody come take my hand
We’ll walk this road together, through the storm
Whatever weather, cold or warm
Just lettin’ you know that, you’re not alone
Holla if you feel like you’ve been down the same road
“Beginnings” by Chicago
The distinctive rhythm guitar was originally played by Chicago’s guitarist Terry Kath. The uncut album version clocked in at 7:54. The original single version was cut to just under three minutes, leaving only a fraction of the climactic second half.
When I’m with you, it doesn’t matter where we are
Or what we’re doing. I’m with you, that’s all that matters
Time passes much too quickly when we’re together laughing
I wish I could sing it to you, oh no
I wish I could sing it to you
Mostly I’m silent
Never think about words to say
“We’ve Only Just Begun” by the Carpenters
The sappiest song on the list, but still a classic. The sappiest song on the list, but still a classic. The song was ranked 405th on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of “the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.” It’s also a very popular song for weddings. Most interestingly, the song began as a song for a bank commercial.
Sharing horizons that are new to us
Watching the signs along the way
Talkin’ it over, just the two of us
Workin’ together day to day, together, together
